feminist organization. It was formed in 1989. Today it has more
than one hundred members on its Directory and an active membership

Canada, Europe, and the Greater China (Hong Kong, Taiwan and Mainland China).
CWSW is the most active academic and activist organization in
the American continent on women's studies, gender and development in China.
Mission
Chinese Society
for Women's Studies aims:
- to promote women's studies, gender and development
among scholars, students, and activists in the United States who
are interested in Chinese women's issues
- to work together with our counterparts in
China to promote women's studies, gender and development in China
- to establish frequent and regular contact
with individuals and organizations worldwide
interested in and concerned with Chinese women's
studies, gender and development.
The present tasks of the Society are to strengthen the
organization, administrative structure and decision-making
process, develop fundraising and membership outreach efforts.
CSWS aims to become a more recognized academic and activist
organization in the near future.
Background
The CSWS started from the Women’s Studies Group formed
during the 1989 annual conference of Chinese historians
in the United States, when seven women students from China
in various disciplines (history, sociology, comparative
literature and American studies) gathered to share their
experiences in women’s studies.
Stimulated by the new perspectives obtained from their
research and motivated by their concern for and commitment
to enhancing women’s studies in their own country, they
decided to form a group and contact each other on a regular
basis. In 1991, the membership of this group grew to more
than 30, and voted to change its name to the Chinese Society
for Women’s Studies in the United States. Though the majority
of its members are students and scholars from the People’s
Republic of China, the Society now also includes American
scholars of Chinese women’s studies, students and scholars
from Taiwan and Hong Kong as well as their counterparts
in Canada, Denmark and England. Currently, we have over
100 members worldwide.
